Passivent is just the ticket for Bishop Auckland’s new bus station

Leading UK manufacturer Passivent has supported the redevelopment of Bishop Auckland’s bus station with a natural ventilation package designed to help deliver a comfortable concourse environment for passengers using the town’s new transport hub.

The scheme, delivered by Esh Construction for Durham County Council, replaces the former station buildings with a modern, fully accessible concourse featuring indoor seating, improved live passenger information, public toilets, parent and child facilities and a retail kiosk. Designed by Jacobs, the project forms part of a wider regeneration programme supported by the government’s Future High Streets Fund.

Working with EMCE Building Services, Passivent supplied 63 window Aircool® ventilators and a three‑zone iC8000 controller to support the building’s natural ventilation strategy. The Aircool units have been positioned on both sides of the concourse to enable secure, controllable cross‑flow ventilation and maintain thermal comfort within the busy bus station environment. The ventilation strategy is managed by Passivent’s iC8000 multi-zone intelligent controller, which automates ventilation by monitoring internal and external temperatures, carbon dioxide levels, time, date and precipitation to modulate the natural ventilation system.

Officially opened in May 2026, the redevelopment of the bus station also includes associated infrastructure works and a 124-space car park. It replaces the former bus station structures with a contemporary facility designed to improve passenger experience, improve connectivity and support Bishop Auckland’s wider regeneration plans.
