Free Night Cooling
Night cooling refers to the operation of natural ventilation at night in order
to purge excess heat and cool the building fabric. A building with sufficient
thermal mass, which can be exposed to nighttime ventilation, can reduce peak
daytime temperatures by 2° to 3° using this strategy.
Night cooling offers the potential to minimise or even avoid the use of mechanical
cooling and improve the internal conditions in naturally ventilated buildings.
Good control of night cooling is required in order to achieve maximum free
cooling whilst avoiding overcooling and subsequent re-heating or thermal discomfort
the following day.
Passivent can offer a range of automated ventilation devices and control systems
that can utilise free night cooling and provide daytime ventilation.
