Acoustic ventilation brings fresh air to major hotel developments without unwanted noise
VILLAGE
HOTELS
A major expansion programme for Village hotels is adopting a fresh approach
to ventilation.
Village aims to open 10 new hotels a year in the UK, with the first in the
North West being the £14m+ four-storey hotel and adjoining leisure club
at Ashton Moss, fronting the M60 Manchester orbital motorway, being built by
ISG Totty.
To ensure each bedroom maintains a fresh environment without intrusive noise
from the nearby motorway, ISG Totty proposed the inclusion of a Passivent Fresh
TLF-dB Acoustic wall ventilator, fitted into the top of the curtain wall transoms
in each of the 120 bedrooms.
Chosen because of client requirements for discreet, controllable background
ventilation, and the Building Regulation Approved Document F1 requirements,
the vent is non-mechanical, requiring no electricity to operate, and designed
to provide efficient dust- and pollen filtered air distribution throughout
the room without draughts. The Fresh TLF-dB additionally provides integral
acoustic attenuation up to 44dB n,e,w ensuring noise from traffic outside does
not penetrate into the room. The vent styling blends in with the contemporary
design and ambience of the hotel.
For the room occupant, the vent can be easily adjusted if required by a slider
operated precision damper. Integral insulation within the fascia prevents possible
condensation.
IBIS HOTELS
National hotel chain IBIS is ensuring guests at its new four-storey development
in the maritime heart of Bristol will have a quiet, fresh environment, naturally,
thanks to Passivent.
Each of the 182 rooms in the hotel, a key part of the new Bristol Harbourside
commercial, residential, retail and leisure complex being built by Kier Western
for Crest Nicholson, and abutting the city’s floating harbour adjacent
to the historic SS Great Britain, will be ventilated using Passivent Fresh
80dB non mechanical through wall ventilators, supplied by Warren Insulation.
Easily installed into the external wall, the Fresh 80dB provides secure, gentle,
draught-free background ventilation in line with Building Regulations Document
F1 with the added benefit of sound insulation, limiting disturbance and noise
from outside penetrating the room. Each ventilator gently draws fresh air into
the room by natural air movement. Ventilation levels in the room can be easily
controlled by the occupier using a pull cord.
The Bristol hotel is the latest to be developed including Passivent Fresh ventilators
by IBIS. Steve Smith, project manager for Accor, IBIS’ parent company,
explained, “We have used natural ventilation and Passivent Fresh ventilators
for almost a decade in our IBIS hotels. They eliminate the cost and maintenance
issues associated with mechanical ventilation, and help improve the design
and planning of the building as there is no associated plant to accommodate
on the roof.”
The Fresh range of wall inlets are themselves part of Passivent’s comprehensive
range of background ventilators for both wall and window installations. The
company also designs and supplies natural ventilation systems for both domestic
and commercial applications, and undertakes an on-going programme of research
and development to bring to market innovative yet practical and sustainable
solutions in line with changing developments.
Passivent are highly experienced in the field of offering tailored ventilation
solutions to hotel developers. Key issues associated with low energy and sustainability
are always at the forefront of design considerations, whilst also ensuring
that system performance and indoor air quality are not compromised.
