APRIL 10 - PASSIVENT PREFERED CHOICE FOR TESCO’S ZERO CARBON TARGET

Leading natural ventilation solutions company Passivent has become a preferred
supplier to Tesco, as part of the supermarket chain’s strategy to become
zero-carbon by 2050.
The deal comes after a successful pilot installation at Tesco’s first
zero carbon store, at Ramsey, which is in line to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘excellent’.
Passivent’s Airscoop ventilation units, strategically positioned on
each store’s roof, incorporate both windward and leeward chambers to
draw cooler, external air into the building, and exhaust the warm, used internal
air. This balances customer comfort with operating plant efficiency, to achieve
optimum conditions for consumers and the fresh, chilled and frozen products.
Flow rates and direction are controlled through a bespoke Passivent IC6000
control panel with integral BacNET data communications protocol, to enable
constant monitoring and improvement of the ventilation system’s performance
as climatic conditions change during the day and throughout the year.
When the internal air temperature, humidity and quality vary outside preset
levels the controller triggers supplementary natural ventilation, and, if required,
the air conditioning system, to help maintain the required ambient levels within.
The only energy consumption is that to attenuate the ventilation louvres to
adjust the flow rates, and run the controller.
The Passivent system will be the preferred choice on all Tesco new stores,
and major refurbishments. The supermarket aims to cut carbon emissions by 50%
by 2020, and be zero carbon by 2050.
Huw Poppy, Passivent Ltd Commercial Manager, observed, “We have worked
closely with Tesco to develop a unique control philosophy to suit their specific
needs. That effort, and the success of the system, is acknowledged with Tesco’s
designation of Passivent as its preferred supplier of natural ventilation systems.”
Natural ventilation is just part of Passivent’s comprehensive range
of sustainable building solutions, which also encompasses daylighting and solar
control. The company, part of the Building Product Design Group, is a founder
member of the NatVent EC/EU-funded project co-ordinated by the Building Research
Establishment to develop practical natural ventilation solutions for the commercial
sector, and has contributed to the BSRIA guide BG2/2005 Wind Driven Natural
Ventilation Systems, as well as being members of the DCSF steering committee
on ventilation guidance for schools, Building Bulletin 101.
