APRIL 10 - PASSIVENT GOES LARGE WITH DAYLIGHT

An innovative development in rooflight technology, that provides a realistic, effective option to maximize natural daylight in commercial and public environments, has been pioneered by Passivent Ltd.

The company, already the UK’s leading supplier of strategies to control natural forces to minimize energy consumption whilst creating appropriate working conditions, offers its new Sunscoop™ Square Ducted rooflight which provides almost as much natural light in even the darkest areas of a room as a bright summer day.

Sunscoop Square Ducted takes the proven and established Sunscoop technology, of a clear glazed roof mounted dome reflecting natural light down a highly reflective tube through the roof void to a ceiling diffuser in the room below.

The 885 x 885mm Sunscoop is connected to the square ducting to enhance structural stability over long runs maximizing light output. The ducting and upstand are insulated to minimize energy loss. The sub base has been independently tested by the Building Research Establishment, and proven to withstand wind loading up to hurricane force (50m/s).

Even the longest 10m unit on an overcast day with no direct sunlight (20k lux) will still yield 595 lux in the room- more than the recommended light requirement for office work, thus reducing or even eliminating the need for supplementary electric lighting during the day, improving energy performance of the building and operating costs.

Georgina Park, Passivent Commercial Marketing Executive, explained, “Natural daylight is recognized for its benefits in commercial and public environments: it enhances occupant performance, encourages a positive atmosphere in retail environments and prompts faster recovery of hospital patients. Under BREEAM, rooflights like Sunscoop score credits particularly under the Health & Wellbeing Section as well as the Energy Section. It is a win:win situation.

“Sunscoop Square Ducted enables areas with larger floor spaces, such as big open plan offices, for example, to reap those benefits, in an efficient way: now one Sunscoop Square Ducted can be used where formerly several smaller conventional Sunscoops would have been used.”

Sunscoop Square Ducted is the latest innovation of the rooflight, which already includes in-line (conservation), and dome versions for domestic and commercial applications. Sunscoop forms part of Passivent’s comprehensive range of strategies to control the natural environment to optimize a comfortable environment within, including natural ventilation, daylight and solar shading.
