AUGUST 09 - TRAVELODGE PASSIVELY AIRS A VIEW ON HEATHROW

Clients using Travelodge’s new Heathrow hotel can be assured of a quiet
and refreshing stay, despite it being almost directly under the flight path
of the UK’s busiest airport, thanks to Passivent.
The UK’s leading supplier of natural ventilation solutions has worked
in partnership with the hotel’s designers JWA Architects to develop a
practical solution that could be easily accommodated in the modular build strategy
yet achieve all Regulatory compliance. As a result, each of the 307 bedrooms
in the seven-storey building incorporates Passivent’s window ventilators
of Overglass Vent Bar and Fresh Acoustic Vent and Canopy.
The combination achieves not only the legal requirement of background ventilation
but also attains at least 40dB noise attenuation to bring sound within an acceptable
level: the noise footprint for the area is 57dB, largely due to the 1000+ aircraft
taking off from or landing at Heathrow Airport- almost opposite the hotel.
Passivent’s thermally-broken Overglass Vent Bar is purpose-designed
for double glazing, preventing either over- or under-ventilation within the
room, and risk of condensation. The internally-mounted Passivent Fresh Acoustic
Window Vent has been specifically developed for noisy environments, reducing
sound penetration from outside whilst maintaining airflow in line with Building
Regulations, yet still allowing the room occupant to adjust airflow to personal
preference.
Explained project architect Steve Blake, “The bedrooms are based on
metal shipping containers and structural requirements demanded a 90 minute
fire rating. Traditional wall vents could not have met this economically, nor
been accommodated within the thin walls. The acoustic issues required both
primary and secondary glazing with a 150mm air gap between, so the use of two
sets of Passivent acoustic vents was a cost effective way of achieving background
ventilation and ensuring compliance with the other issues of fire and noise.”
Added Project Manager Andy Trim, “the acoustic tests have concluded
that the Passivent ventilators have achieved the sound reduction required to
comply with the Travelodge specification while maintaining ventilation to the
bedrooms.”
In addition to a comprehensive range of standard and acoustic window trickle
ventilators, Passivent supplies the Fresh range of through wall ventilators,
plus BBA- certified ‘whole house’ natural and mechanical ventilation
solutions, with or without acoustic options. All of these contribute towards
efficient ventilation of the building with little or no energy consumption.
Passivent is part of the Building Product Design Group, which specialises in
developing innovative yet practical ventilation and roofing products in line
with changing market requirements.
