FEBRUARY 09 - IMPROVED ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL
Simpler
and better control over the internal environment is being attained with a new
range of controllers from Passivent Ltd.
The company, one of the UK’s leading suppliers if natural ventilation
solutions for the commercial and public environment claims the iC5000 controllers
offer benefits for both the installer and occupier to help create a fresh draught-free
and comfortable atmosphere within the building. The units work specifically
with Passivent’s range of natural ventilation equipment which harnesses
natural variations in air movement and temperature to ensure a building is
effectively ventilated silently and with little or no energy consumption. The
systems have been proven to help achieve BREEAM ratings of at least ‘very
good’ on one project and an energy performance certificate rating of
A in a thermal model study on another.
By using latest direct digital algorithm technology the controllers enable
more functions to be managed from one place minimising the amount the wiring
and eliminating the need for an engineer with bespoke computer equipment to
adjust settings. Each controller can command up to four zones and enables the
user to adjust set points to individual preference simply and quickly using ‘trick
with a click’ scroll menus on the LCD screen.
Additional features include built-in night cooling software which purges any
excess heat which may have built up in the day to create a pleasant internal
environment the following day individual room control adjustment of the ventilator
louvres according to external wind speed and a ‘mixed mode’ option
which enables seamless switching between passive and mechanical ventilation
as required. A boiler plant demand option triggers the boiler to operate only
when there is a demand for heat in a room reducing energy consumption by ensuring
the boiler does not run continuously.
For schools and training environments a further optional ‘sports hall’ mode
enables manual selection of ventilation requirement when the sports hall is
in use for activity o exams.
Wayne Aston, Passivent Director of Technical comments “Research shows
that well designed naturally ventilated buildings improve worker performance
student learning and reduce incidence of sick building syndrome. The new iC5000
controllers take advantage of developments in technology to give even better
control over the internal environment to ensure the building is ventilated
in a way which meets all Regulatory requirements with minimal energy consumption
whilst creating a pleasant place in which to work play and learn.”
Passivent is part of the Building Product Design Group, and is the UK’s
leading supplier of natural ventilation systems for both domestic and commercial
applications. The company is a founder member of the NatVent EC-EU-funded project
co-ordinated by the Building Research Establishment to develop practical natural
ventilation solutions for the commercial sector, and has contributed to the
BISRIA guide BG2/2005 Wind Driven Natural Ventilation Systems, as well as being
members of the DfES steering committee on ventilation guidance for schools,
Building Bulletin 101.
