OCTOBER 08 - PASSIVENT WINS ‘SUSTAINABLE BUILDING
SOLUTION’ AWARD
The environmental benefits of Passivent natural ventilation have been endorsed
by the winning of a major industry award.
The company’s innovative Airscoop system for large or deep-plan buildings-
such as open plan offices, industrial units, auditoria and sports halls- has
won the Sustainable Building Product Award at the 2008 100% Detail exhibition,
claimed to be one of the world’s most important architectural and building
design shows.
Lead judge for the Award, and editor of Sustain magazine, Jim McClelland, observed, “It
is the second year of the Award and the entries were much higher in volume, quality
and breadth. Passivent won with Airscoop not only because of the sustainable
benefits of the product itself but the fully co-ordinated, environmentally-aware
package from manufacture to marketplace.”
Passivent, which has attained ISO14001 international environmental management
standard at both its manufacturing and management sites, produces two versions
of Airscoop- Enhanced and Basic. Airscoop is a roof mounted terminal divided
diagonally into four chambers. Wind from any direction is channelled down through
the windward chambers into the building, which exhausts warm, “used” air
out through the leeward chambers. The Enhanced version uses a unique quad arrangement
of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) designed inlets/outlets with integral four-way
damper to provide a smooth efficient passage of air movement at low velocity
along with effective air distribution.
All Airscoop units are designed to function regardless of wind direction and
speed to provide a controllable natural ventilation solution which operates 24/7
, and uses no power to move the air, thus reducing capital, running and maintenance
costs for the life of the building. Additional acoustic treatment can be incorporated
where the system is being used in noisy locations, which provides acoustic attentuation
up to 42dB.
Passivent is part of the Building Product Design Group and is the UK’s
leading designer and supplier of natural ventilation systems for both domestic
and commercial applications. The company is a founder member of the NatVent EC-EU-funded
project co-ordinated by the Building Research establishment to develop practical
natural ventilation solutions for the commercial sector, and has also contributed
to the BISRIA Guide BG2/2005 Wind Driven Natural Ventilation Systems, as well
as being a member of the DfES steering committee on natural ventilation guidance
for schools, Building Bulletin 101.
