OCTOBER 07 - DUCTLESS ‘WHOLE HOUSE’ VENTILATION

Positive Input Ventilation

An innovative approach to an already tried and tested method of ventilation being introduced by Passivent Ltd is set to further improving the internal living environment by cutting condensation risk.

The company, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of ventilation solutions, has developed a ductless ‘whole house’ Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) System, to effectively ventilate the home, cut condensation and minimise energy consumption. The system, which is easy to install, overcomes the problems normally associated with accommodating ducting in existing properties, making it particularly suitable for refurbishment projects.

The virtually silent low energy DC fan unit, which is strategically placed in the loftspace above the landing or hall, filters and delivers air gently from outside via the loftspace through an aerodynamic ceiling diffuser. By directing incoming air along the ceiling (coanda effect) where it mixes with warm buoyant air, the diffuser is able to ensure a more even thermal gradient between the floor and ceiling. The fresh incoming air displaces stale, moisture-laden air within the property, thereby lowering humidity, and alleviating condensation and the potential for mould.

Due to solar gain, the loft air is generally warmer than outside air, so requires less ‘heating’ to maintain the ambient temperature within the home below. In addition, a temperature sensor continuously monitors the incoming air temperature, boosting the system to heat recovery mode when conditions are beneficial, thereby providing free solar energy.

Passivent maintains the PIV system costs only around 1p/day to run.

Of benefit to social housing landlords, the fan unit incorporates a timer to show that the tenants have been running the unit continuously, should there be a damp or condensation issue at the property.

Mike Massey, Passivent Technical Manager, observes, “Our PIV is proven to be an effective means of curing condensation and so mould growth in existing housing stock. It requires no occupant input, so gives housing providers the reassurance that their property is properly ventilated and not being unduly exposed to potentially damaging conditions caused by the tenants’ lifestyle.”

Passivent is a leading supplier of ventilation solutions to the domestic market. It provides a comprehensive range of background trickle ventilators, the Fresh range of through wall ventilators, and ‘whole house’ natural ventilation solutions, with or without acoustic options, all of which contribute towards efficient ventilation of the home with little or no energy consumption. Passivent is part of the Building Product Design Group, which specialises in developing innovative yet practical ventilation and roofing products in line with changing market requirements.
