FEBRUARY 07 - AIRING CLARIFICATION ON REGULATIONS
Specification
of educational buildings is becoming increasingly complex, with changing Building
Regulations and DfES guidance notes and Building Bulletins all needing to be
taken into account. Passivent Ltd, the UK’s leading authority on natural
ventilation solutions, has aimed to clarify the issues, and the concept of natural
ventilation, with publication of a new ‘white paper’.
“Natural Ventilation for Schools- Meeting the Regulatory Requirements” explains
in simple terms the principle of natural ventilation, what basic criteria
should be included to ensure meeting all appropriate regulations, and the
various solutions that can be utilized to achieve compliance.
The paper includes useful diagrams, illustrating the principles and how
elements interact to achieve the air flow, air change and temperature control
requirements.
David Stolton, Product Manager -Passivent Commercial, elaborates “Natural
ventilation is ideal for building such as schools, because of the public
sector demand for low energy, sustainable solutions and its ability to
function effectively without human input once the initial controls have
been set up. It is also extremely cost-effectivene: initial capital costs
are reduced typically by 15%, and operating costs can be cut by up to 40%.
There is also the hidden benefit that naturally ventilated schools are
proven to improve students’ learning capacity and reduce incidence
of ‘sick building syndrome’.”
Passivent has designed and supplied natural ventilation systems for numerous
schools, including the architectural award-winning Grainville School in
Jersey and St Johns College Cambridge.
The company is a founder member of the NatVent EC-EU-funded project co-ordinated
by the Building Research Establishment to develop practical natural ventilation
solutions for the commercial sector, and has also contributed to the BISRIA
guide BG2/2005 Wind Driven Natural Ventilation Systems, is a member of
the steering group committee for CIBSE guidance documents and a member
of the CIBSE Natural Ventilation Group.
